| Finale Garden: The Manalo Family
After purchasing their quarter acre property in 1979 for only $4,500.00 – thirty years later Terry and Remy Manalo have a lot to be proud of.
Very clean lined and simple, this garden maximizes on space by utilizing a style that Terry says is popular in the Philippines – made of concrete and plaster – he had a wall built around the property designed to complement the landscape. The green and brown colors create a very natural look and what’s especially nice is the use of the flower pots along the wall where Terry and Remy grow various types of flowers.
If you’d like to do something different than the traditional concrete slab for the entrance or garage…why not consider using slate as they did. Or…even something with a little more color and creativity…a tiled walkway. Terry says he made his out of leftover pieces from projects that he’s worked on. Not only does it add character, but it’s a great way to green your home.
If you’re wondering how to landscape along a sidewalk, here’s an idea: section it off, add bark, then plant smaller flowers or shrubs the length of the area. What’s nice is how Terry and Remy chose to use red for color…while it draws the eye down, at the same time it keeps you moving forward since they used the same flowers the entire walkway. And you don’t have to be a farmer to plant bilinbines or star apples…it’s a great tree to add to your garden and adds a nice contrast with the shape and size of the fruit, plus you gotta love edible ornaments.
While they can be pricey, once you get them going foxtails will give back…Terry’s had to actually nail pieces of wood to these palms for support. After growing for about seven years…he’s got dozens of seeds he’s collected from his foxtails.
Now the layout of this garden proves once more that if you’re able to plan ahead and keep things organized and simple, you can achieve a LOT. A banister guides you around the circumference of the garden where you can get loads of inspiration and ideas – from the variety of plants and the different techniques used to present them to a tranquil waterfall filled with bromeliads…and then as you round the bend, an outdoor gazebo uses columns to create a more spacious feel and they’ve got everything in there to cook up whatever they need to entertain…Guam style.
Of course everything surrounds this gracious center space of manicured grass which Terry and Remy say they spend at least 30 minutes a day tending to in order to keep it looking its best. While he did consider putting a pool in the middle, they’ve decided to leave it the way it is…giving them more options and room when it comes to have family and guests over.
Clean, simple, colorful and creative…this wraps up our last garden for the season…we thank the manalo family for welcoming us and wish them luck with their future projects.
