| BIGGER IS BETTER: Tricks to Maximize Your Bathroom:
When it comes to the one room in your home that gets the most mileage: bigger is better.
From the moment you wake up to that final “visit” before it’s time to retire…the BATHROOM is definitely a space that deserves some TLC.
To create the look of a bigger space, Christine Wolke of RIM Architects tells Pacific HG that it’s all about color, lighting, and placement of furniture.
For example, the new luxury homes located at the STARTS Golf Course in Dededo feature a number of useful techniques in order to open up smaller spaces.
Wolke says that by using a sandy color palette for the floors and the walls you affect the space visually by fooling the eye into making the bathroom seem larger. Keep in mind that color is the fastest and most dramatic design element. The color of paint, wallpaper, fabric or furniture can change the atmosphere of any room. Pastels or light colors, with a lot of white reflect light and draw the eyes upward -- making the room seem taller. Dark tones like green and red tend to draw the eyes down and make the room appear smaller. If you’re able to invest some money into purchasing certain elements to broaden your bathroom space…then you may want to consider a vessel sink, larger mirrors and suspended lighting fixtures. Wolke explains that suspended lights will reflect off of the mirror to make the room look bigger. Another trick you’ll want to remember if you’re completely remodeling your bathroom is if you install lower counterspace, this too creates more room without having to do an ounce of work to expand the space.
With the sink as the focal point in the master bathroom, Wolke says they installed rimless glass partitions on opposite sides to create sections for the toilet and shower. This is a design element which compartmentalizes, but also keeps the eye flowing through the space because of the rimless glass.
Storage space can be created in a small bathroom through the use of exact fitting furniture. If possible, use a small set of shelves on the counter or find ones that can attach firmly to the wall. You can also use larger cabinets than the usual medicine chest. Under the counter cabinet space should be maximized as well.
With the number of hardware stores and home improvement departments expanding on Guam, there’s definitely a variety of products you can choose from in order to find the right colors, furniture and fixtures that will compliment your small bathroom space. And with the bathroom being one of the hot spots in a home, you definitely owe it to yourself to make the most out of that personal space!
