| FEATURE: AIR CON 101:
Air conditioning is an absolute on Guam. But it can be pretty expensive to keep it running, so here’s where Pacific HG will help you out by sharing expert advice on ways to maintain your unit in hopes of preventing those power bill blues.
One: ROUTINELY clean your filters:
Once the coil starts getting dirty, this means the air that’s trying to come through the fan blower on the inside will start blocking up.
According to ACR Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, “Your fans have cups, which catch air and send it out. After a while if your unit isn’t serviced and cleaned, the cups becomes like hollow pipes inside and they just keep spinning again and again. The result is your unit’s inability to satisfy. Your power goes up and there’s your energy cost.”
Maintenance is key…so if possible, the second thing you want do is: get your units serviced every 3 to 4 months. Can’t afford it? Here’s a solution for AC’s on drip mode:
“Not recommended,” said ACR “but if you notice that the line is dripping…get a wet vac, go outside and suck the drain line. It’ll clear and you can save yourself a service bill.”
Three: if you do have it serviced…get the job done right:
“You need to make sure whoever is servicing your unit does not use harsh acid chemicals to clean your coils. A lot of people think the shinier the better…no, the chemicals start eating the coating, meantime the coils are also being affected by every day elements – so that’s why everything starts rusting and falling apart.”
While These tips MAY save you money – you also have the option of cashing in with PREMIUM units. Going with top of the line will not only help you save on your power bill in the long run, but these quality products are likely to have a higher efficiency rating which means less damage to the environment. One homeowner
In the case of a five bedroom home with an office, kitchen, living room, family room and dining room – the residence realized the savings after investing in 3 compact Mitsubishi heavy industry inverters. The power bill literally downsized from $1200 a month to now $600 a month.
At Talo Verde Estates, one of Guam’s upcoming premiere housing developments in Tamuning, MJM International installed 13 seer Heil central air units in all of the homes.
Each system comes with a UV lamp which keeps the coils clean by preventing mildew and mold from growing on them. This in turn keeps maintenance at a bare minimum.
The homes also utilize programmable thermostats. MJM International Corporation Owner Michael Pizarro explains, “the good thing about a programmable thermostat is in terms of cost savings you can program in a give day or week how many times you want to turn it on/off which gives you more control and energy savings.”
When it comes to technicians and contractors –make sure they know how to calculate the appropriate size unit for your home whether ductless or central. Pizarro adds, “if it’s undersized…the compressor works harder making your power bill more expensive.”
